The largest number of new pupils have been absorbed by the General schools—4,984, more than half of all the pupils (55.1 per cent.) enrolled in all the schools in the years 5694 and 5695. During the last two years forty new schools have been opened by the education authorities of the Knesseth Israel, and their number now amounts to 312 as against 272 in 5693. Among the new schools are twenty-seven kindergartens and fifteen elementary schools. On the other hand, one vocational school was closed down and another is no longer under the control of the Knesseth Israel. Of the twenty-seven new kindergartens, two belong to the General class and twenty-seven to the Histadruth (seventy-two in 5695 as against forty-five in 5693). The number of Mizrachi kindergartens has decreased by two. The fifteen new elementary schools are divided as follows : five General, three Mizrachi, seven Histadruth. The large majority of the new schools have been opened in Tel-Aviv and in the Labour settlements. C. Number of Teachers.
