E.—EDUCATION. I.—THE SCHOOLS. The years 1933-34 and 1934-35 are the second and third years since the transfer of the control of the Jewish school system to the communal authorities (Vaad Leumi). The experience gained in these two years strengthened the conviction among the general public that the transfer of the schools from the control of the Jewish Agency to that of the organised Yishub (Knesseth Israel), constituted an important reform in the Jewish educational system. During these two years of growth and progress in the Yishub, the range of educational work has also been enlarged. The schools have expanded and increased in number, and the public share in the maintenance of the schools has increased accordingly. The rapid development involved problems of principle and organisation, with which the education authorities have dealt in accordance with the tasks and the increased needs of the Yishub in this period of prosperity. The Growth of the School System. A. School Enrolment. In the years 5694 and 5695 the school system has developed much more rapidly than in previous years. The enrolment in all the schools of the Vaad Leumi increased by 8,877 in the period under review—from 23,911 in 5693 to 32,788 this year, that is, an increase of 37.1 per cent. Compared with 5694 the enrolment increased by 5,082, or 18.3 per cent. 1. The growth according to areas. The expansion of the school system is shared by almost all parts of the country, but the differences in the extent of the expansion between the various areas are considerable, as seen in the following table : School Enrolment. The first place is taken by the Haifa schools, which have absorbed during 380
