conditions. The report submitted by this company states that from August, 1933, to May, 1935, the Geophysical company carried out prospecting in forty-four settlements, covering an area of 95,000 dunams, and that a hydraulic chart has been drawn up covering an area o$ 45,000 dunams. These prospecting operations have been carried out by the Agricultural Department of the Agency, the Jewish National Fund, the Palestine Jewish Colonisation Association, the Irrigation company of the eastern valley of Esdraelon and by private individuals. In thirty-three settlements positive results have already been registered by prospecting and boring operations commenced in them. The operations in sixteen settlements proved definitely successful, in twelve operations are still proceeding, and in the remaining four operations have not yet begun. Dr. Loewenberg, in conjunction with Dr. Loewenstein, carried out twenty-nine prospecting operations. In six places they found water, in two no water was found, which corresponded with their conclusions, in five places boring operations are still in progress, and in the remaining sixteen operations have not yet begun. The progress achieved, thanks to geological and geophysical research, can be gauged from the following figures comparing the prospecting results up to 1933 with those obtained since then. Completed borings......... Borings in progress ...... Successful borings ...... Percentage of successful borings Non-successful borings ...... Percentage of non-successful borings ... Average volume of water per well per hour Average depths of the borings...... Up to 1933. 1933-1935. 44 26 — 9 14 20 32% 77% 30 6 68% 23% 8.6 eu. m. 55 eu. m. 42 m. 90 m. The well in Nahalal which draws its water from the drainage system, is not included in this calculation. Similarly, wells supplying less than 3.5 cubic metres per hour have not been included. Thanks to the geological and geophysical experts now resident in the country, hydraulic research in all the zones of the country is expected to commence shortly, and the future settlers will no longer be subjected to the sufferings and thirst that afflicted their forerunners in the past. Table 9 shows the progress achieved in the production of agricultural produce in the last four to five years. 372
