This branch is not yet sufficiently developed to yield profits. Some of them are still short of coops, incubators, etc. Financial assistance for this purpose was granted to the settlers only this year in the final consolidation budget, and it is hoped that the settlers being now equipped with the necessary working means, will make this branch shortly self-supporting. Exact figures from the smallholding settlements are not available, as they do not keep books. However, it is clear that the settlements that succeeded in obtaining a yield of 3,000 litres per cow per annum are self-supporting. Such cows, after the deduction of all the expenses involved in their maintenance, food, insurance, etc., yielded a net income of £P.15—17 per annum. 7. Food Supply for the Cattle Herds. With the exception of the settlements in the mountain zone (Kiryath-Anavim and Ataroth), all the other settlements provide their own fodder : dry and green hay, lucerne, clover, maize where there is irrigation, and maize silage in the places where there are no irrigation facilities. The silos erected in the settlements which have no irrigation facilities produced good results. The Falha fields provide the cow-sheds with straw, stubble, barley and maize seeds. The statistical figures which were collected regarding supplies show that the fodder produced in the agricultural settlements for the requirements of the cow-sheds amounts to 64 per cent, of the whole grain production. The various fodder yields in the settlements fluctuate as follows : Clover under irrigation Lucerne Green maize...... Beetroot ...... Non-irrigated hay from 8 to 10 tons per dunam. from 6 to 8 tons per dunam. from 3 to 4 tons per dunam. from 8 to 12 tons per dunam. from 1.5 to 2 tons per dunam. 357
