only agriculture but also other branches in the villages and towns. At the same time, on parallel lines, smallholding settlements based on individualistic lines were established. <d. The Training of Settlers. Simultaneously with the extension of the colonisation work, there grew a need of training Chalutzim for manual labour in general and for agriculture in particular. The plantation colonies gradually expanded their boundaries after the War. The area of plantations increased by the investment of private capital, and new settlement units were added. The handful of labourers in the colonies, which, during the occupation amounted to about 200, grew to thousands very rapidly. The colonies began to feel the need for more up-to-date systems of cultivation, and the labourer was able to acquire the necessary training for mixed farming. The colonies of Galilee, which always absorbed Jewish labourers, helped considerably in training the new pioneers for their destined tasks. Almost every farmer of the Galilean colonies employed a Jewish worker. In most of the colonies training groups were established, and the Colonisation Department provided the necessary facilities for setting up auxiliary farms and thus preparing the Chalutzim for mixed farming settlements.
