rooms, diets, etc., were introduced. In Haifa an additional hostel for 100 persons was built with the help of the Department for the Settlement of German Jews, barracks were added to the hostel in Tel-Aviv, and now the Immigration Department, with the assistance of the Keren Hayesod, is about to build large new hostels in Tel-Aviv (Northern District) and Haifa in keeping with the anticipated immigration of the future. One of the most urgent questions—a question on which our whole future depends—is, which way does immigration face? It is known that most of the immigrants belonging to other categories are absorbed by the towns, but the same is, unhappily, true also in the case of labour immigrants. The figures for immigrants sent to employment by the immigration hostels in Tel-Aviv and Haifa are instructive : Table 13. Number SENT to Employment by Immigrants' Hostels. Went to work in Adults. It is only when the employment is actually confirmed (in a communal group, in skilled work, etc.) that they leave the hostel and receive a loan from the immigration office to carry them over the first few days at the place of work. The following are the organisations which help to settle Halutzim in employment : Table 14. Halutzim for whom employment was found by Organisations and Institutions. 1933. 1934. Tel Aviv. Haifa.
