Poland takes first place among the countries of origin, in 1933, 12,879 (47 per cent.); 1934, 15,104 (41 per cent.). Their training too is good, supplying 18,000 halutzim who provide a constantly renewed stream to the pioneer movement in this country. Poland also accounts for most of the other categories—persons of means, relatives, etc. Immigration from Germany increased particularly after the events of the spring of 1933 which so profoundly affected the life of the Jewish community there. About 30 per cent, of our certificates were forwarded to those countries whither the refugees had fled and to the Palestine Office in Berlin, to which thousands of Jews looked as to their only hope. The immigrants from Germany and the refugees from that country were mostly inhabitants of Germany of long standing : Tourists German Polish allowed Citizens. Citizens. Others. Total, to remain.
