the country. In 1932 there set in a period of immigration embracing every class and every section of the Jewish people, when figures jumped from 9,500 in 1932 to 30,000 in 1933, to 42,500 in 1934, and it is estimated to 50,000, a record, in 1935. This is, therefore, a period of mass immigration, thousands at a time, similar in its characteristics and structure to the largescale movements which went to form those great Jewish communities in America now numbering millions of souls. Conservatively estimated the Jewish Yishuv in Palestine may be figured at 330,000 souls, and it comes first in the list of countries offering refuge to those who have been forced to flee from their countries.* Table 2. There was such a slowing down in October, 1933, as a result of demonstrations and rioting by the Arabs in Palestine. The labour schedules since then have been issued in instalments and it has been necessary to retard the immigration movement and to adjust it to this policy. The average number of immigrants per month was 3,500 at the end of 1933, 2,500 in the first half of 1934, and 4,000 in the second half. It is obvious that such a slowing down of immigration must interfere with labour conditions, for it is difficult to arrange the transport of immigrants to suit the requirements of the labour market. * The number of Jews who immigrated to the United States of America in 1933-34 was 4,154; to Canada, 943; to South Africa, 676. Countries in order of Jewish population are :—U.S.A., Poland, Russia, Roumania, Hungary, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Palestine. f Immigration of non-Jews into Palestine was : Christians. Moslems.
