attended by Mr. M. Grajewer of Buenos Aires, who visited Chile as a Keren Hayesod delegate. During the period under review a number of meetings and celebrations were organised on the anniversaries of the Balfour Declaration and Herzl's death, in commemoration of Bialik and of Maimonides' 800th Anniversary, etc. All these activities were carried out by the Federation Department for Propaganda and Culture. On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Zionist Federation in Chile, the Department for Propaganda and Culture published a special book in Spanish containing material relating to the history of the Federation in Chile and special articles by Zionist leaders on various Zionist problems. Up to the end of 1934 the Federation published a monthly bulletin in Spanish which had a circulation of about 1,600. Since January, 1935, the Department for Propaganda has been publishing a Spanish weekly called Mondo Judee, which serves as Zionist propaganda. Apart from the Mondo Judee, there are in Chile two more Jewish periodicals, the Yiddishe Presse, a weekly in Yiddish, and Alma Hebrea, a monthly in Spanish. Both of these are Zionist. Another Yiddish monthly, South America, which started publication in the beginning of 1935 is a literary organ not dealing with Zionist problems, 4. Financial Activities. (a) The Shekel. In 5694 the number of shekolim disposed of was 658. The Shekel campaign in 5695 has been launched on a larger scale and there are prospects of disposing of at least about 900 shekolim. (b) Keren Kayemeth. The collections for the Jewish National Fund in 5694 realised 27,447.10 Pesas. In the first eight months of 5695 about 20,000 Pesas have been collected. (c) Keren Hayesod. The 5693 campaign which lasted up to December, 1933, resulted in the collection of 87,945 Pesas. The 5694 campaign realised about 45,000 Pesas. 5. Hebrew Work.—The Education Department of the Federation is supervising the Hebrew schools and various classes for the instruction of Hebrew. There is a Hebrew school in Santiago, consisting of a Kindergarten and three elementary classes, in which Hebrew and Spanish are the languages of instruction. Apart from this there are four Hebrew schools for the study of Hebrew for children attending general schools. About 250 children obtain Hebrew instruction. The " Tarbut " branch in Santiago has a membership of 80. During the last year the branch organised twelve Hebrew lectures on various Hebrew topics. Recently Hebrew classes for adults have been established in Santiago : one by the Education Department of the Federation, one by the " Tarbut," and one by the Sephardic community. 204
