great value. The 32,000 dunams acquired represent areas of rich soil, containing no tracts of inferior soil. Moreover they are practically all suitable for farming on an intensive scale, being irrigable from open springs or wells, and are therefore destined for close settlement, as indicated below. Rural Land. Of the area of 6,380 dunams acquired in Judea and the Sharon, 1,160 dunams have been allocated for the establishment of agricultural Workers' Quarters near Moshavoth (private villages), in which each family is allotted a small holding varying from 2\ to 5 dunams. The largest of these Workmen's Quarters will be established on a tract of 1,000 dunams east of Petach Tikvah. Two hundred families will settle there, fifty being immigrants from Germany. Near Ness Ziona a tract of land has been acquired for a similar purpose, and will render possible the settlement of fifty families. Another Workers' Quarter for twenty families is being established at Rehoboth on a tract of 50 dunams of land donated to the J.N.F. in his memory by the family of the late Aaron Eisenberg. The remaining areas—apart from 180 dunams which were purchased for the establishment of Workers' Camps near various Moshavoth—have been allocated for the purpose of intensive agricultural settlement with 10-20 dunams as the unit per settler. The following are the more important among them : On the land at El Harem—north of Herzlia—a tract of 1,082 dunams for sixtyfive families; in the neighbourhood of Gedera, a tract of 1,619 dunams for seventy families; adjoining Gan-Yavneh, a tract of 366 dunams for twenty-five families; adjoining Ber Tuvia, 580 dunams for fifteen families; between Petach Tikvah and Bnei Brak 374 dunams for thirty families; adjoining Kfar Saba, 184 dunams for eighteen families. In the neighbourhood of Tel Mond an additional tract of 742 dunams was acquired, which will permit the extension of the existing settlement there by about a further sixty families. The tract purchased in Emek Jezreel is situated near Shatta and Kumie. It links up with the existing Ein Harod lands and so enables us to complete the individual units and to extend settlement there. Another settlement is being established on our land at Shatta. The tracts which are in the Beisan and Jordan Valleys are also destined for new settlement. The majority of the settlers, an additional 450 families, will enjoy irrigation facilities. These tracts include one of plantation land which was acquired from the funds collected by the campaign to honour the memory of the late Dr. Arlosorofr, and which, together with the land previously purchased in this region, will be the centre of an extremely important agricultural settlement. It will be seen that the land which has been acquired by the Jewish National Fund during the period under review suffices for the settlement of about 1,100 families. 165
