Representations were made to secure a pardon for several Jewish prisoners, most of whom were serving sententences on account of being found m illegal possession of arms which they had obtained for self defence. These efforts were only partially successful. 93. The Political Department had under its charge the Press Bureau of the Executive. It took steps to ensure a correct telegraphic transmission of news from Palestine to the Jewish public abroad, which was of particular importance during the disturbances. It responded to the innumerable calls of newspaper representatives from various countries, Jews and non-Jews, who visited Palestine in large numbers during the disorders and thereafter, and turned to the Jewish Agency for information, assistance or guidance; Members of the Department attended to prominent tourists and generally supervised the work of the Zionist Bureau for Tourists. 94. To enable the Political Department to cope with the new multifarious duties imposed upon it a considerable increase of staff became necessary. In March, 1936, Dr. Bernard Joseph joined the Department as its permanent Legal Adviser and since then took an active part in its general work. In the absence of the Head of the Department, he acted for him in the direction of its current work. Jerusalem, July, 1937.
