Our Task and Äims Editorial The primary aim of the “YidiSe Ekonomik” is to be a scientific organ devoted to Jewish social problems in the widest meaning of this Word. But it also claims to become a practical linstrument which will facilitate the understanding of the entangled! processes going on in the Jewish group, processes into which even | the most remote and strange-feeling parts of the nation get gradu- 1 ally involved. While negative processes are prevailing, there is also evidence of positive efforts of the Jews in countries of a mass Settlement to adapt themselves to the new conditions. The transformation of those individual efforts irito a planned and collective action is the crucial problem of our epoch, and the leading idea of our Journal. We are not going to supply ready made sociological formulae or political ideas, our aim is to supply the realistic material. We shall collect in the first place Statistical data spread over a number of official publications, but we shall also proceed by ourselves to partial censuses, inquiries and investigations, in Order to provide for a better and more complete evidence concerning in Jewish economic life. Much attention will be devoted to the problem of emigration. For within the last 50 years no less than 3 million Jews have left Europe, and the emigration problems ave getting particularly complex just now* when all the migration movements are being handicapped. Also the big strides made by the Jewish social self-assistance merit a scientific treatment. Thus, .our Journal will contain 2 (1) Papers dealing with the Jewish sociological, economic and Statistical problems; (2)Statist;cal I notes along the following lines: (a) Biotics, (b) Economics, (c) Educational activity etc., (d) Criminality, (e) Miscellanea; and' (3) Bibliography. I The Jewish Commerce in Polish Small Towns J. Lestschinsky I ln the period from 1932 to 1937, for which Statistical evidence was secured by means of inquiries and of monographs of individual towns, there was a marked fall off in the Jewish trade. The proportion of Jewish shops declined everywhere, the drop being more marked in the central region, where population is rather homogeneous, and less marked in the north-eastern and south-eastern territories, those with mixed population. The number of non-Jewish shops has doubled everywhere. But while in the
