Die englische Intervention z. Gunsten d. böhmischen Juden i. J. 1744. 273 VII. Brief an Robinson. Whitehall, *22. Feb. 1745. Sir As it does not appear that the representations vdiich yon and Mr. Burmania ivere directed to make in favonr of the Jews in Bohemia and the other Hereditary Conntries ׳ have as yet produced any effect, I write this seperate letter to you by the kings order to acquaint you with His Majesty’s pleasure that you should eontinne io make the strongest instances in his name for obtaining a reversal of the terrible sentence pronounced by } our eourt, upon so many tliousands innocent families wliioh the King has as mucli at heart, that he does most earnestly intreat the Queen of Hungary to suffer his intercession to prevail in tlieir behalf, in whicli His Majesty so much the more readiiy flatters liimself witli Her compliance as, not to mention any arguments drawn from her real interest, Her persevering in that severe and merciless lesolution could not but be esteemed by all mankind as an indelible stain both in point of justice and clemency upon her hithertomoderate and equitable Government־ I am & cet. Harrington. VIII. Aus einem Briefe Mr. Porterlsב) an Mr. Westonby * 2). Vienna, March 4th, 1745 .The poor Jews at Prague got oue month respite, 11־ arrived there a day or two before that of execution, most of theiii had emigrated and took shelter in the villages about the town; when the order arrived the Regency insinuated that they migiit stay, and were for recalling about 10000 in motion, but tliey resolutely refused to retum. About 6 or 400 of the easiest remained in the town. I hope that this will put an end to the tragic story. r) Sir James Porter, später englischer Gesandter in Koustantinopcl, wurde in den Jahren 1740—1746 von der englischen Regierung wiederhcdentlich in Hamlelsangelegenheiten nach Wien geschickt. 2) Wohl irrtümlich abgeschiiebeu für Westen, Esq; dieser war Staats- Untersekretär im Ministerium des Aeusseren in den Jahren 1730—46.
