424 Aus einem Briefe Eikau N. Adlers. Ans einem Briefe Eikan N. Adler's. To judge hy my ow 11 spccimen fragments from tl!c Fostat Genizali, as well as those cited in the Monatsschrift article ‘,Zur Geschichte der Khethuhba’h there does not seem to havc beeil any uniformity in tlie j>rea1111)le to the uiarriage (,ontraet in the days of the Xagidim. Thus I have fragments of Khethubboth dated in 1034 and 1242 without any preainble. The גיסה הבחיבה hereinafter rctcrred to has none And wheu there is a preambleT it varies from the most ornate poetry to the most laudable brevity. A בח*ברי of ndne dated 8. Ellul 1070 has onlv the words “*,על שמיר, רבריין יבג* "צליח"; anotho.r apparently somewhat later has no more than tlie two words בשעה ■מעילה after whieh innnediately follows tlie date בקרי ן בשבחא רד•יא« תשער. יי,'. < >f an other בחיבה nothing remains but Zl"ההץ *שניה* שגי . . . Oll the other hand, 1 have two poetieal prefacos both ot the time of Samuel tlie Nagid ben Mordecai 1j the Nagid, which are at least as ornate as Professor Merxs — Xathanael — בח־ברי. One begins as folows: הגקהלה ישיש* f לירח גיסן יצליחו [פסעה מעיל]ה ועוגה מד. יללה וההילה ומילוי בל שאלה | ] לאר הגולה ירים היה* מעלה מעלה ילחחן וישמחו יציצי ייפיהו יבגו ויצליח* נ יא ובה דשג7 אלפא [וארבע] מאה ושהי! Ä Yemen Machzor belonging to my brother the Chief Kabln, and another belonging to myself, both stereotype a form identieally the saiue as that quoted by Professor Kaufmann, exeept that it is a little less fiorid in that it omits the referenee to the שושגה. My Persian Siddur from Bokhara — unique I bclieve — gives speciinens of the ordinary כחובה as well as of the כחובה יבכין. Here too a similarly ornate introduction is stereotyped. It reads thus: בגהורא ט בא ובסימנא מעליא סימן טוב וסימן גאולה לח־חן \לכלד, ולעדה סגולה ולאדוגגו ראש הישיבה של גולה בגין ומצליחין ער עולם אמן ג(ס)[ע]ח סלה. י) I do not know l)r. Neubauer’a authority for assigning ,חגניד to Samuel as 111s father. From my fragmeut it would 8eem that Mordecai was either liis father or his grandfather. If grandfather, tlie lineal hereditary suecession of Nagidim is noteworthy.
