327 (iii) Is 110t any Interpretation of the laws that confines public worship for almost all Israel to the three pilgrimage seasons palpably improbable, not to say impossible? To return to his lettered paragraphs: — (a) Most of this is directed against Oestreicher, Welch etc, and I agree ־with König that Dt xii contemplates a single central sanctuary for all Israel, not one or more for each tribe. (b) This is answered by some words of mine on p 364 which König has overlooked: ״Das Erlaubte konnte aber sehr leicht in Verbotenes übergehen und zwar dadurch, daß man ... To take an illustration: the altars of Dt xxvii, Samuel, Naaman etc were lawful, but had anybody brought, say, bikkurim (Ex xxiii 19) or firstlings to one of them he would have been breaking the law. Thus we are brought back once more to the old point that horned and cairn altars had different splieres of utility. The bamoth condemned by the writers in Kings had priesthoods of their own (2 K xxiii 8), which at once puts them in a different category from Samuel’s bamah, and were in competition with Jerusalem. In other words local altars that conformed to the legal prescriptions were permissible so long as they were utilised for lawful purposes and did not invade the sphere of the central sanctuary, but were wrong and pernicious the moment they infringed on its exclusive field. That is the meaning of Kings iii 2. The writer is objecting to the bamoth being used as substitutes for the central Sanctuary and explaining that there was a justification for this b e f 0 r e the construction of the Temple. He does not object to the local offering of sacrifices which were not required to be brought to the religious Capital. Hence with perfect consistency Kings does not question the correctness of the view taken by Adonijah, Elijah and Elisha. (c) The difference between post-exilic and pre-exilic practice which I recognise was rendered possible by the invention of non-sacrificial public worship. In the late period Naaman instead of being told to go in peace would have been instructed to worship without sacrifice. Berichtigung. Jerusalem. J. N. Epstein. של אותם Z. 4 habe ich absichtlich auseinandergehalten und für das verdruckte כתתנו ist selbstredend Z. 5 נתכנו zu lesen. Warschau 1884, § 12, S. 49, Z. 15 v. 0., wo .כתב גלחות erwähnt wird. Graz. D. Herzog.
