9ä ״ßuenäe (El Abate). — Cartas de unos Jadios Alemanes y Polacos a M. de Voltaire; con un comentario sacado de otro mayor, y euatro memorias sobre la fertilidad de la Judea. 3 volo. 8®. Bruselas 1827.“ This is, of course the translation of the celebra|;ed Lettres de quelques Juifs portug. et allemands ä Mr. de Voltaire, translations of which into Dutch (Amsterdam, 1773—82?) and English (Philadelphia, 1795, 8#; Covington, 1845) are not very rare. The American edition was published by Rer. Philip Lefanu, D. D. There are two copies of it in the Leeser Library in Philadelphia. (See Dr. Cyrus Adler’s Catalogue of the Leeser Library, Philad., 1883, p. 18.) The Mexiean edition I have not seen. A copy of it, I am told by a Mexiean bookseller, was recently sold to a collector of old. prints in Chicago for 10 Doll. — Among the many books forbidden by the Inquisition in Mexico (Prohibidos aun para los que tienen lic.en.cia) — the list is published in the rare journal, Diaris de Mexico, t. V, 1807, no. 550, pp. 367—70; 372—4; 375 - 8 [״Edicto del Saato Tribunal de en Fee“; cf. also t. XI, pp. 351—54] — is mentioned the following, p. 368, no. 5: ״Le Vieillard du Mont Cauease aux Juifs Portugals, Allemands et Polonais: ouvrage attribue ä un ami de l’Auteur de la Henriade, orne du portrait de M. d. V . . ., un tomo en 8°, impreso en Roterdam afio de 1777: por ser un conjunto de proposiciones impinosas ä la Sagrada Escritura, y contrarias ä los puntos mas sagrädos de nuestra Religion y Disciplina Eclesiästica“. -r- The work is mentioned in Fürst/s ßibliotheca Judaica, 111, 486, where another edition, issued at Lausanne, 1785, 8° is referred to. fienjamin Mussafia Eidalgo published a reply to the above work, entitled: Essays du veillard [sic] du mont Libanon pour servir d’Examen ä certaines assertioris du l'i7re du Veillard du mont Cauease. No date is given by Fürst, 1. c. On the numerous Voltairian controversies see Frankel’s Monatsschrift, 1868, p. 163 sq.; 208 sq.; Graetz, Geschichte, XI, p. 53 sq., 60 sq. — lt is evident t'rom the prohibition of the Hoiy Office that Voltaire and all literature supporting his heresy were in circulation in Mexico. lt will be remembered that one of the foremost opponents of Voltaire was!saac de Pinto, of Bordeaux, equally noted as a moralist, political economist, litterateur and apologist of the Jews. llis defense of Jewish tradition is prefixed to the English translations of the Letters of Certain Jews to Voltaire. It is not generally known hovewer, that he wrote two (or three?) books 0n the causes and political aspects of the Revolutionary War in
